UJ's faculty of art, design and architecture required a creative and innovative alternative to their current evacuation guide. As cosmic fans of the Marvel cinematic universe, our immediate idea was to centre our design around the advanced civilization that is Wakanda. Like at Black Panther’s Wakanda, we at FADA  are forward thinkers designing for a better tomorrow.  We strive to be just as advanced, technological and creative. We also appreciate the richness and beauty of African cultures. To capture this beauty, we drew inspiration from various African patterns, typefaces and symbols. We also used a less traditional and more uneven, paint-like brush stroke. To match this and to add character, we opted to adopt a style that is less geometric and ‘straight’. In our designs, we made use of Black Panther’s mask, the unique Wakandan skyline (visible in the movie) and various Wakandan symbols. We formulated our map’s key using these symbols. Alongside Helvetica, we used the primary typeface of the Black Panther movie, Beyno. We adapted each map to one of Black Panther's three suits, hence, our colour choice of purple for map one, silver for map two and yellow for map three. We used cream as an accompanying colour and completed the designs on a textured, black background.
